UIM UM Coverage Auto Insurance Rawls Scheer Foster Mingo

It’s a leap year! According to Earthsky’s article about leap year, an extra day is added to the calendar year once every four years to synchronize our calendar with the Earth’s orbit around the sun. So, what to do with this extra leap day? It strikes me that this is the perfect day to review your auto insurance coverage and be sure you have what you need. What your family needs. You will likely need to increase the amount of UM/UIM coverage you carry.

Uninsured/Underinsured (UM/UIM) is the only auto insurance we can buy to protect ourselves and our loved ones against our own losses when someone else is at fault. In North Carolina we have the option to purchase one million dollars of uninsured and underinsured (UM/UIM) motorist coverage for a relatively low premium.

Why, you may ask, am I making a big deal about UM/UIM coverage? I’ve got three reasons. For starters, in 2015 we had the largest increase in traffic deaths in the U.S. in fifty years. For most of us, driving is the most dangerous thing we do each day. And while we may be terrific defensive drivers, sometimes we cannot avoid the negligent driver that comes out of nowhere.

Next, North Carolina has minimum liability policy limits of $30,000 per person and $60,000 per collision and this is simply not enough coverage for you or your loved one when significantly injured in a crash.

Last, it only takes a few minutes and a call to your insurance agent to add or increase this coverage on your policy. You will be better protected and you will still have over 23 extra hours to fill this year!
